San Juan Backcountry Facebook San Juan Backcountry Trip Advisor
Grand Imperial Hotel - Silverton Colorado

San Juan Backcountry is offering a once in a lifetime experience for enjoying the beautiful rugged San Juan Mountains. You talk about something to fill a BUCKET LIST - this is it:

For 4 nights and 3 days, San Juan Backcountry will furnish an adventure on ATV's (single) UTV's (side-by-side razor) or 2-up ATV's through some of the most remote beautiful rugged country in America. Everything will be furnished (except you); machines, rain gear, food, water, lodging, etc. Come prepared to see great landscapes, rugged mountain terrain, waterfalls, old mines, old mills, tram towers, ghost towns, wildflowers (in season), and often times, wildlife. The roads we will tour are old Ute Indian trails, mining roads, old supply routes, all from the 1800's until now.

Our experienced guides will tell you of the history of the San Juan area, and stop for pictures, snacks, and talks along the way. Each guide is experienced with the trails and history. Each day will be filled with excitement and a full day of riding. The sights and views you will see are unbelievable and breath taking.

Itinerary:

First Night: You will start in Silverton, a historic mining town of the old west, where you will enjoy old Victorian buildings, shops, and famous Notorious Blair Street. You will spend the night in the Grand Imperial Hotel of Silverton. We will kick off the tour by having an orientation from 6:30PM to 8:30PM to meet and greet, including drinks and finger foods.

Day One:

At 9:00AM, San Juan Backcountry will get you started for the adventure of a lifetime. We go through Howardsville, the first ghost town, by the Old Hundred Mine, over Stony Pass (where the Continental Divide and Colorado Trail are), and the head waters for the Rio Grande River start. We will follow along the river to the Rio Grande Reservoir. At this point we will stop for lunch, and then really get started on the adventure. We start over the Lost Trail to the ghost town of Carson and end up at the beautiful Lake San Cristobal near Lake City. We will have a great meal and good night's rest with a beautiful setting, campfire, hiking or just resting.

Day Two:
Animas Forks, Ghost Town

We start off with a great breakfast, then mount up again and ride over Cinnamon Pass (12,700 feet). We will end up at Animas Forks for lunch (ghost town). After lunch, we head over California Pass (12,940 feet). At this point there is a short hike to 13,000 feet elevation. From here we ride over Hurricane Pass (12,700 feet) overlooking beautiful Lake Como, on to Corkscrew Pass, and at the end of the day we end up on the Million Dollar Highway where we load the ATV's and go to Ouray, CO for a great experience.

Ouray, Colorado

The Hotel at Ouray is an experience of it's own with great rooms, underground hot springs for soaking (this will feel good after riding all day). Chief Ouray of the Ute Indians found and used these hot springs during his lifetime.

The Hotel also has a swimming pool that is filled with the hot mineral spring water for your enjoyment. Other options at the hotel are steam rooms, massages, shops, etc.

SPECIAL NOTE: You can't be a smoker or have smoked in the last three (3) months in order to stay in this hotel. If you are a smoker, we have another hotel with a heated pool that also has great rooms. We will dine at a great Mexican Restaurant In Ouray.

Day Three:

We start with a great breakfast, and as usual, mount up again on ATV's. This time we will be going over Imogene Pass, which is the tallest pass in the San Juans (13,200 feet), stream crossing (when possible), beautiful views, old mines, and great history in this area. We will be able to see Telluride from the Tom Boy Mining area before turning back to reload ATV's and go across lower Engineer Pass on the world famous Alpine Loop and back to Animas Forks, and then back to Silverton. You will spend the night again in the Grand Imperial Hotel and on this night we will have a farewell dinner for our guests.
